Handle assembly for a vacuum cleaner including a handle portion having a tubular hand-gripping portion, a tubular wand-engaging portion and a metal tube extending from the wand-engaging portion. The handle portion defines a cavity at a rear for receiving an adapter terminating a hose and a slot leading to the cavity. An interconnection housing is attached to the handle portion to cover the slot and includes a pair of contacts extending through the slot into the cavity such that when an adapter with contact rings is positioned in the cavity, the contacts engage with the contact rings.
