  1. In a hydraulic chain tensioner for an engine timing drive, an annular groove is formed on an outer circumferential surface of a plunger, and a friction ring is disposed in the groove. The friction ring is composed of an external resin ring and an internal steel ring incorporated into the inside of the resin ring. The friction ring is fitted into the annular groove of the plunger with a predetermined axial clearance. It allows the tensioner to operate with good responsiveness during normal engine operation, but resists excessive slack in the chain, and prevents backlash and fluttering, during engine start-up.
