The invention provides a device and method for producing substantially kinematic steering of a boat whose yaw rate and direction is approximately proportional to the rate and direction that a steering device such as a steering wheel is being operated. The invention provides a helmsman a precise method of steering that is relatively independent of such considerations such as the size and weight of the boat, conflicting currents and winds, windage, the size of the rudder and the overall inherent controlling characteristics of the boat.
