A drive unit for controlling drives of machine tools or production machines includes a signal electronics unit, a startup/diagnostic unit, and an interface between the signal electronics unit and the startup/diagnostic unit. The interface has a data line for data exchange between the signal electronics unit and the startup/diagnostic unit, and an electric power line independent of the data line.
