An implantable cardiac device is programmed to differentiate between central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. The implantable cardiac device utilizes a respiration-related parameter (e.g., respiration rate, tidal volume, and minute ventilation) to determine whether the patient is experiencing an episode of sleep apnea.
